Caprese

The "Caprese" is a traditional Italian dish known for its simplicity and fresh flavors. Originating from the island of Capri, this salad has earned a prominent place in both Italian and international cuisine. The Caprese embodies the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomato), white (mozzarella), and green (basil).

The exact history of the Caprese's origins is unclear, but it is believed to have been created in the 1920s or 1930s. According to one of the more popular legends, it was invented to satisfy the tastes of tourists visiting Capri, who were looking for a simple yet flavorful dish that represented Italian culture. The salad quickly became popular due to its delicious combination of flavors and its representation of Italian culinary tradition.

As the Caprese gained popularity, it spread beyond the shores of Capri to the rest of Italy and eventually around the world. It is often served as a starter dish (antipasto) in Italian meals, especially in the summer months when tomatoes are at their ripest. The simplicity of the Caprese salad, requiring no cooking and just a few high-quality ingredients, has made it a favorite among home cooks and professional chefs alike.

WHAT’S NEEDED:

  • Tools

        • 1 cutting board

  • Ingredients (serves 4 people)

        • 9 oz mozzarella (better if buffalo)

        • 18 oz tomatoes (the ideal are beefsteak tomatoes)

        • Basil

        • Oregano

HOW TO:

Perhaps one of the easiest recipes ever invented, yet it remains among the best.

Take the mozzarella and cut it into 5mm slices. Do the same with the tomatoes. If you're using cherry tomatoes, simply slice them in half.

Arrange them on a plate, alternating between tomato and mozzarella slices. Garnish with basil and season with salt, pepper, oregano, and a bit of balsamic vinegar if you prefer.
